HubSpot alternatives: what you're actually trying to escape
People look for alternatives for four different reasons, and each one points somewhere else. Here's how to tell which one you have before you migrate anything.
Contents
“HubSpot alternatives” is four different searches wearing the same words, and the answer changes completely depending on which one you’re doing.
Sort that out first and the shortlist writes itself. Skip it and you migrate to something that has the same problem in a different colour.
The four reasons, and where each one leads
1. It’s too expensive for what you use
The most common one, and the one where people migrate unnecessarily.
The trap isn’t the price of HubSpot — it’s the shape of the tiers. The free plan is genuinely free and genuinely useful. The entry paid tier is $7 per seat per month. But the features people most often want next — workflows, real marketing automation — sit in Professional, not in Starter.
So the jump isn’t small, and the surprise isn’t the price tag, it’s the distance between the tier you were quoted and the tier that does the job.
Before you migrate: write down the three things you need it to do, then find the tier that includes all three, at HubSpot and at whatever you’re comparing it to. Very often the alternative has exactly the same structure and you’d be paying a similar amount to relearn a tool.
2. You want automation, and you’re on the free plan
This is a real reason to look elsewhere, and it’s not a preference — it’s a hard limit.
HubSpot’s free plan allows one automated action and one automated email per form. That’s the whole automation surface. Workflows are a Professional feature.
If sequences are the point of the exercise, you’re not looking for a HubSpot alternative — you’re looking for a tool built the other way round, with automation first and a CRM attached. ActiveCampaign is the obvious one. Two things to check before you commit: there’s no free tier, only a trial, and deal pipelines aren’t included in its entry tier either.
3. It’s too heavy for the size you are
Also real, and rarely stated plainly.
An empty HubSpot account arrives with 213 contact properties and 77 deal properties, before you’ve added a single record. I counted them. Most exist for features you’re not using, and some for features the free plan doesn’t include — but every one of them appears in your import mapping, your filters and your form builder.
If your reaction to opening the tool is “where is anything”, that’s the reason, and the fix isn’t a cheaper CRM. It’s a smaller one. Tools that live inside your inbox — Streak, OnePageCRM — solve this by not being a place you have to visit. I earn nothing from either; I’m naming them because for this specific reason they’re the right answer.
4. Branding, or a wall you’ve already hit
The quiet one, and the only reason on this list that has a deadline.
On the free plan HubSpot’s branding appears on every form, landing page, meeting link and marketing email, and cannot be removed. If clients see those, this decides for you regardless of price or features.
Same with the structural limits: 1 deal pipeline, 2 users, 2,000 email sends per calendar month counted per send. If you’ve hit one, no alternative is “better” — you’re simply shopping for a tool whose free or entry tier has a different shape.
The comparison nobody publishes
Here’s what actually differs, stripped of feature lists:
| Built around | Where it hurts | |
|---|---|---|
| HubSpot | CRM first, marketing attached | Ships heavy; automation is a Professional feature; free-tier branding |
| ActiveCampaign | Automation first, light CRM | No free tier; pipelines not in the entry tier |
| Inbox-based tools | Not being a destination | Won’t scale past a small pipeline; not built for teams |
Everything else is a matter of which shape fits the job. There is no tool on this list that is better at everything, and any article telling you otherwise is selling one.
Not sure which applies to you?
Five questions. Nothing is collected, and there's no email step.
| If this is you | Start with |
|---|---|
| Clients see your forms or emails | A paid tier — free-plan branding can't be removed |
| Email sequences are the core | ActiveCampaign |
| You need 2+ pipelines, or 3+ people | A paid tier of either |
| One person, under 10 active deals | Streak or OnePageCRM — I earn nothing from these |
| Anything else | HubSpot free |
What I’d do before migrating anything
Name the reason out loud. If you can’t put it in one sentence, you don’t have a tool problem yet.
Check whether a tier change fixes it. Migrating costs weeks. Upgrading costs money. Weeks are usually more expensive than you think, especially with client data in flight.
Export first, always. Whatever you move to, get a clean CSV out before you start, and check what happened to phone numbers, dates and your custom fields. That’s where migration damage hides — not in the records that fail to import, but in the ones that import wrong and look fine.
